The cranial bones are the bones that make up the skull, which is the protective bony structure that encloses the brain. There are eight cranial bones in total, which are:
Frontal bone: located at the front of the skull, forming the forehead and the upper part of the eye sockets.
Parietal bones: two bones located at the top and sides of the skull, which meet in the middle of the head.
Temporal bones: two bones located at the sides and base of the skull, which contain the ear canals and the lower part of the skull.
Occipital bone: located at the back and base of the skull, forming the back of the head and the base of the skull.
Sphenoid bone: located at the base of the skull, forming part of the eye sockets and the nasal cavity.
Ethmoid bone: located at the front of the skull, between the eye sockets, and forming part of the nasal cavity and the eye sockets.
These cranial bones are fused together by immovable joints called sutures, which provide stability to the skull and protect the brain from injury.
